Some Hasbro brands have come under fire for their use of AI in the past, and Dungeons & Dragons’ art was heavily criticized for its use of technology in its early days. At a time when AI seems to be becoming more integrated into our daily lives, it appears that some companies are using it and others are avoiding it. Hasbro clearly falls into the latter category these days, even though the company’s CEO remains a fan of the technology.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cox said in an interview with TheVerge that the company uses AI “all the time for personal passion projects.” Specifically, he brings “AI-based animation, images, text, sound effects, and voice cloning” Go to the D&D table while he’s DMing. I’m sure everyone has their own ideas, but Cox also seems to understand that aspect of using AI and doesn’t want to force it into Hasbro’s video games and tabletop experiences.
“I think you have to think about it from a creative context. [AI] Very carefully.” Cox explained. “There are some brands whose audiences and creators don’t want that, so they’re not putting it in the pipeline for video games or Magic: The Gathering or D&D either.” But in the toy space, Cox says Hasbro has found significant use of AI in concepts.
“Well, you can generate 1,000 ideas and 999 of them might not be that good, but one of them might be magical, and it’s basically free to create.” he said.
