Google is giving your old photos a new life, but it's moving. Now deployed in the US, Google has converted still images into 6-second video clips and launched a video-to-video tool from free AI-powered photos with transitions and music. Equipped with the advanced VEO 2 model, this feature resides within Google Photos and is also integrated into YouTube shorts.
“Imagine a perfect selfie from years ago suddenly coming back to life in subtle movements, or picture your parents as a child smiling at you,” Google said in a statement announcing the rollout.
Users can select a photo from an existing gallery and apply creative prompts such as “Subtle Movement” or “I'm Fortunate” and animate it with just a few taps. The resulting clip mimics today's snackable video formats that dominate platforms such as shorts, reels, and tiktok.
The move is based on Google's growth portfolio of consumer-oriented AI tools, following a July update to Gemini, which showcases Veo's generation video capabilities.
When you remix photos with images along with photo-to-video features, Google introduces Remix. This is a new tool powered by Imagen AI engine that will restore images from the gallery to a fresh, stylized version in seconds. Whether it's nostalgia or novelty, remixes offer rapid, creative transformation tailored to social sharing.
All AI-corrected images carry Google's SynthID watermark to ensure transparency in content creation.
Both features are gradually rolling out to Android and iOS users in the US and will become widely available in the coming weeks.
