On Wednesday, Google announced a new lineup of pixel smartphones injected with another dose of artificial intelligence designed to do everything from getting the important information stored on your device to improve the photo when the photo is being taken.
The AI expansion of the Four Pixel 10 model amplifies Google's efforts to expand the use of technology, which is already beginning to rebuild society. At the same time, Google is swiping the heels of Apple's Achilles on your iPhone.
So far, Apple has been able to introduce some basic AI capabilities to the iPhone, failing to fulfill its promise last year to offer a more conversational and versatile version of the often richer virtual assistant Siri.
Without mentioning the name of the iPhone, Google is already laughing at Apple's misstep with online ads promoting four new Pixel models as smartphones loaded with AI technology.
“There was a lot of hype about this, and frankly, there were a lot of broken promises,” Google's Executive Osterlow said in a 75-minute presentation in New York, about his new pixel phone. The event was hosted by late-night television show host Jimmy Fallon.
In contrast, Google has steadily increased the amount of AI that has started implanting pixels since 2023, and this year's model is taking it to another level.
“I think this year there will be game-changing phones with game-changing technology,” Osterloh says.
Google will use its more sophisticated processors to introduce new AI capabilities to its Pixel 10 phones called “Magic Cue.” It is designed to act as a digital mind reader that automatically retrieves information stored on your device and displays data at the time you need it. For example, if a Pixel 10 user is calling an airline, Magic Cue is supposed to instantly recognize the phone number and display flight information if it is in Gmail or Google Calendar.
The pixel-10 phone comes with a preview feature of a new AI tool called “Camera Coach,” which automatically suggests the optimum framing and lighting angle, as it targets the lens. Camera coaches also recommend the best lens mode to use for the best images.
Premium models (Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL) also include the “Super Res” option that deploys a grab bag of software and AI tricks, zooming up to 100x resolution to capture details of objects located miles away from the camera.
AI wizardry can occur without the user realizing that it is happening, making it even more difficult to know if the image captured in a photo reflects what things actually look like when the photo is taken or when it is changed by technology.
The Pixel 10 can also use participants' own voices to convert phone conversations into different languages almost instantly.
Google is also offering a free one-year subscription to the AI Pro plan to anyone purchasing a more expensive Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL model in the hopes of connecting more people with the Gemini Toolkit assembled to compete with Openai's ChatGPT.
Prices for all four pixel 10 models remain unchanged from last year's Pixel 9th generation, with bases selling for $800, Pro for $1,000, Pro XL for $1,200, and foldable versions for $1,800. All Pixel 10S are hoping to have a folding model in store on August 28th. The Pixel10Pro fold will be available from October 9th.
The pixel smartphone remains the Lilliputian next to the Gulliverian Site, the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy model, but Google's continued advances in AI have raised competitive interests while retaining a line of marquee devices.
“In the age of AI, it's a true lab of innovation,” Forrester research analyst Thomas Husson said of Pixel.
In particular, Apple will face more pressure than usual when it introduces its next-generation iPhone next month. The company has already said that the smarter Siri is not ready early until next year, but it is expected that Apple will show some advancements in AI and demonstrate that the iPhone is adapting to the evolution of AI in technology rather than gradually becoming obsolete.
Clinging to the once successful formula, it finally sunk BlackBerry and its physical keyboard when the iPhone and its touchscreen came on nearly 20 years ago.
Considering that the devices are made in China and India, Apple's next iPhone pricing will also be in the spotlight.
But Apple appeared to be getting a reprieve from Trump's most troublesome threat earlier this month by adding another $100 billion in addition to its previous $500 billion investment pledge. With tariff easing, Apple can minimize or avoid price increases on iPhones, as Google did with the Pixel 10 model.
