Tech Giant is launching the consumer version of VIDS, adding AI avatars and advanced features to the paid class.
Google has made Google Vids, a browser-based video editor, available for the first time for consumers with a free version that offers basic editing capabilities. The announcement, made Wednesday, comes along with a significant update to the platform's paid tier, including new AI-powered features from avatars and images to video.
The free consumer version has basic editing controls along with access to Google's template library, font collection and stock media libraries, but does not offer AI capabilities at this time.
From workspace only to consumer access
Google Vids was originally launched in 2024 as part of Google Workspace Productivity Suite, serving business customers only. The browser-based app was only available as a paid add-on until this week's expansion to free users.
The move represents Google's efforts to compete in the increasingly crowded video editing market, challenging established players such as Adobe Premiere and new AI-powered competitors. By offering a free tier, Google aims to democratize video creation tools that previously were accessible by paying for enterprise customers.
AI features a drive premium experience
The free version focuses on basic editing features, but Google has significantly enhanced its paid offering with cutting-edge AI capabilities. The most notable addition is the AI avatar. This is a feature that allows users to create videos without being visible to the camera itself.
Users can post scripts, select avatars from different voices and personas, and create videos that resemble products from companies such as Synthesia and D-ID in the business video space. Google announced the AI avatar feature at Google I/O in May, and released it in beta. Currently, this feature is reaching general availability.
The platform also integrates Google's VEO 3 image-to-video technology, allowing users to convert static images into 8-second video clips. Google launched the VEO 3 image-to-video generation feature in July and is currently adding that feature to VIDS.
Smart editing functions address common problems
Another important addition is automated transcript trimming, designed to streamline the video editing process. This feature automatically detects filler words such as “um” and “ah” and detects long pauses. Click on these words or pause to delete them and the editor will adjust the video accordingly.
This feature addresses common challenges in video production. With this feature, manually removing filler words is time-consuming and technically challenging for amateur editors.
