Google is developing an artificial intelligence tool for news publishers that can generate article text and headlines, the company said, highlighting how the technology will soon transform the journalism industry.
In a statement, the tech giant said it was considering partnering with news outlets on the use of AI tools in newsrooms.
A Google spokesperson said, “Our goal is to help journalists find ways to improve their work and productivity in the same way that Gmail and Google Docs give people the tools to help them.” It’s about giving people the choice to use technology.”
The initiative was first reported by The New York Times, which says the project is internally called “Genesis” and owns The Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. It is reportedly being pitched to News Corp.
Google’s statement did not name these media companies, but said the company is specifically focused on “smaller publishers.” It added that the project was not intended to replace journalists or journalists’ “important role in reporting, producing and fact-checking stories”.
The new tool comes as technology companies, including Google, race to develop and introduce new generative AI capabilities into applications used in the workplace in hopes of streamlining tasks and improving employee productivity. Appeared in
However, concerns have also been raised as these tools are trained on online information and may misrepresent facts or “hallucinate” responses.
News outlet CNET was forced to announce a “substantial” revision earlier this year after experimenting with using AI tools to write articles. And what was supposed to be a simple AI-written article about Star Wars that Gizmodo published earlier this month needed a similar fix. However, both media outlets said they would continue to push forward with the use of the technology.
