All that remains is to put everything together. It starts with a strategic framework for IoT development. In other words, to bring an IoT project from scratch to market, you need to know what to do and in what order. Here we explain how Agile methodologies work as a framework for product development.
Most software development strategies derive from two main methodologies: waterfall and Agile. The waterfall model organizes the development process into a series of steps with distinct phases and dependencies. First, gather your requirements. Then make a plan. Design, develop, test, and finally deploy one product after another without deviation.
This tidy system lends itself well to static hardware development. After all, you can’t replace the plastic once it leaves the extruder.
But waterfall development does not support the iterative growth that leads to great IoT products. To do that, we need to take advantage of agile methodologies that provide a proven framework for building IoT systems.
Understand agile methodologies for IoT products

So how does this simple priority list translate into a highly effective IoT product development process?

Most IoT development sprints consist of nine major steps:
- Advance planning: Validate assumptions and identify constraints (budgets, staffing levels, time limits, etc.).

- Beta test manufacturing run: The first production will produce about 100 devices. We will distribute these to our beta testers and fix them as they arise.
- Early adopter manufacturing execution: Once we are satisfied with the first 100 devices, we will scale up to produce about 1,000 products for early adopters. Please continue to collect feedback and make improvements.
- Full production: At this point, the product is ready to go to market with the first full manufacturing run.
At the end of each production step, create an MVP that proves the value of your project. However, the product evolves out of the MVP realm and reaches maturity as you start adding features. It then moves on to larger manufacturing processes, continuing to iterate and improve at each step.

Technical Design Sprint: Starting the IoT Development Process
