Google extends the VIDS video editor with AI capabilities. Free version

AI Video & Visuals

Google VIDS video editing software was launched last year as part of the company's workspace suite productivity tools. Back then, browser-based apps were only available as paid add-ons. Now, Google has announced that in addition to updating VIDS with new AI-powered features, it is also creating a basic version that is available to free users.

One new premium addition is the image-to-video feature powered by Veo 3. Like existing tools in Gemini and Flow, this new feature allows users to convert images into video clips. This tool allows users to generate 8 seconds of video with audio.

Apart from the new image-to-video tools, the brand also has AI avatars installed. Essentially, users can upload scripts to their apps and distribute content to their avatars. A video showing this feature depicts a diverse selection of AI avatars to choose from. According to Google, avatars are ideal for creating training, demos and onboarding videos.

Additionally, the company has introduced the ability to automatically detect and pause filler words, allowing users to quickly remove them. Beyond that, Google plans to introduce noise cancellation and backgrounds next month. New sizing formats are also set to arrive someday in the future.

Of course, these shiny tools are only available to customers. Those who use the workspace for free will get a strip down version without all the special AI-powered features. To help users get started with VIDS, Google has introduced a new “Vids on Vids” series. This uses the AI avatar mentioned above to present the functionality of the app.
