AI is driving breakthroughs in scientific discovery and research, but these advances depend on the global community. To bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, Google DeepMind is launching additional courses in its AI Research Fundamentals curriculum, an advanced AI education designed for the next generation of technology learners across Africa.
Hands-on experience with generative AI models
Developed in collaboration with education experts and academics at University College London, this course is available for free on Google Skills and gives learners the opportunity to build and fine-tune language models from scratch. Google.org helps develop curriculum in African classrooms by funding teacher training and instructional toolkits.
Already serving thousands of users around the world, this curriculum goes beyond AI literacy to provide polytechnic students and community learners with a deep and applied understanding of modern AI systems. Learners gain hands-on experience with generative language models and transformers based on responsible innovation principles. These skills are the foundation of the future of AI research, where learners can use advanced AI to advance society’s biggest challenges.
These courses can be studied independently, at your own pace, or incorporated into structured courses taught by educators from non-governmental organizations and universities.
Localized to the African context and made to have a global impact
One in five people on the planet lives in Africa, yet only 1.8% of contributions to AI research come from Africa. There is a tremendous opportunity here to bring more African innovation to the table and ensure that tomorrow’s AI is built by and for the global community.
Recognizing this clear need, we localized the AI Research Foundations curriculum to the African context through collaboration with local learners and experts at the African Institute of Mathematics (AIMS). The program features real-world research use cases unique to this continent. Built with African communities in mind, but available for free to learners around the world.
