Google announces 75% of its new code is generated by AI

AI For Business

Google announced Wednesday that three-quarters of new code created within Google is generated by AI and reviewed by human engineers.

Their number has been increasing in recent years. As of October 2024, about a quarter of the company’s code was generated by AI, Google said at the time. It announced last fall that number had risen to 50%.

The company has encouraged its employees to use AI in both coding and other tasks. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post Wednesday that the company is moving toward “true agent-like workflows” in which engineers perform more autonomous tasks.

“A particularly complex code migration that our agents and engineers recently performed together completed six times faster than the engineers could have done alone a year ago,” Pichai said.

Google engineers are using Gemini models for code generation, and some have specific AI goals that will be factored into this year’s performance reviews.

Business Insider previously reported that some employees at Google DeepMind have been allowed to use Anthropic’s Claude code in recent months, causing tension among employees.
