Google and NASA develop AI medical assistants for space missions
……………

Google and NASA are collaborating on artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support astronauts' health during space missions, Euronows reported. “Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant” is designed to help astronauts and ground medical teams diagnose and treat medical issues in real time, especially when communication with the Earth is limited.

AI systems provide flight surgeons with predictive analytics and detailed guidance to support decision-making in isolated environments. Early proof-of-concept tests demonstrate reliable diagnosis based on reported symptoms, and developers are currently working with healthcare professionals to refine the model.

This innovation is particularly relevant as NASA prepares Artemis II and III missions for the month. Astronauts are currently trained in first aid, CPR, and space-specific medical conditions, accompanied by medical kits and access to pharmacies at the International Space Station (ISS). However, missions except low-Earth orbit face communication delays of up to 10 seconds on the moon and 40 minutes on Mars, making remote medical support difficult.

The AI assistant aims to provide robust, autonomous healthcare capabilities, allowing astronauts to manage emergencies independently and limit their reliance on Earth-based teams. Researchers emphasize that such systems are important for multi-year deep space missions where immediate evacuation is not possible.
