Google is adding AI automation powered by Gemini to more tasks in Workspace. At Tuesday's Google I/O keynote, the company said that as AI becomes more intelligent and learns more, the advanced Gemini 1.5 Pro will “develop connective tissue across multiple applications with AI-powered workflows. ” will be available soon in the side panel of your workspace. The updated workspace side panel, first added to Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, lets you chat with Gemini about your content. The long context window (essentially memory) allows you to organize, understand, and contextualize data from different apps without leaving the app you're currently using. This includes comparing receipt attachments, summaries (and answering round-trip questions, etc.). ) Highlight important points from long email threads, or meeting recordings.
Another example provided by Google was about planning a family reunion when a grandmother asks for hotel information. Email-based changes also apply to the Gmail mobile app. “Gemini will soon be able to analyze email threads and provide a summary view with key highlights, similar to a side panel, right in the Gmail app,” the company said.
This month, summaries in the Gmail app are coming to Workspace Labs. Meanwhile, the upgraded Workspace side panel will be available starting Tuesday for Workspace Labs and Gemini for Workspace Alpha users. According to Google, all features will be rolled out to the remaining Workspace customers and Google One AI Premium users next month.
