Stamford, Conn., April 11, 2024 — Gartner says 75% of enterprise software engineers will use AI code assistants by 2028, up from less than 10% in early 2023 . 63% of organizations are currently piloting. According to Gartner's Q3 2023 survey of 598 global respondents, people are implementing or have already implemented an AI code assistant.

AI Code Assistant enables capabilities beyond code generation and completion. These are collaborative assistants that improve developer efficiency by stimulating brainstorming and enhancing code quality enhancements, allowing developers to continually improve their skills and become proficient across programming frameworks. will do so. “Software engineering leaders need to determine ROI and build the business case as they scale deployment of AI code assistants,” said Philip Walsh, senior principal analyst at Gartner. “However, his traditional ROI framework steers engineering leaders toward metrics centered on cost savings. This narrow view fails to capture the full value of AI code assistants.”
Reframing the ROI conversation is key to maximizing the value of your AI code assistant
Traditional ROI frameworks don't allow you to maximize the value of AI code assistants. To build an effective value story that goes beyond traditional ROI metrics, software engineering leaders must reframe the ROI discussion from cost savings to value creation (see Figure 1).
