Early in his career, Will Lawrence worked on Facebook’s product team focused on anti-money laundering. David Marcus, former president of PayPal, was brought in to help launch company-wide payments initiatives, including the launch of WhatsApp in India and Brazil. However, Lawrence quickly learned that the main hurdle was the decidedly unsexy compliance task of making sure the product complied with local “know your customer” regulations and fraud prevention.
After working on the compliance team at stablecoin infrastructure company Paxos, Lawrence decided to ride the generative AI wave and join one of the first Y Combinator batches after the launch of ChatGPT. His argument was that anti-money laundering and customer awareness compliance operations will be one of the breakthrough use cases for applying AI to financial services. Lawrence’s gamble turned out to be prescient. Less than three years later, his startup Bretton AI (formerly known as Greenlite) announced a $75 million Series B funding round led by Sapphire Ventures, with participation from his seed and Series A backer Greylock, as well as Thomson Reuters Ventures and Canvas Ventures.
Lawrence says there are two layers to the world of financial oversight. The first is risk mitigation, which can be solved with more rudimentary machine learning. In other words, if a user starts transferring $50 million per day, the system should easily know that further investigation is needed. The second layer, risk remediation, is more complex. This is where Brereton’s focus lies, where complex investigations are conducted to uncover the background of the parties involved in suspicious transactions and whether they violated a company’s internal risk policies.
As AI increasingly commoditizes software (and potentially renders countless SaaS startups and publicly traded companies obsolete), Sapphire managing director Rajeev Dharm said the confidentiality of a product like Bretton, which needs to be sold to the trust infrastructure of large financial institutions, “feels more protected.” Greylock general partner Seth Rosenberg added that banks like JPMorgan could benefit from bringing in a third party rather than using Anthropic to develop their own applications. “When a compliance business reaches scale, it can become smarter because it looks at data across industries,” he said. For now, Breton is focused on financial services companies as clients, from fintech startups like Mercury, Lamp and Robinhood to a number of community and regional banks, including tech-friendly Lead Bank.
Financial services has long been a tricky area for vertical AI companies. When AI systems become unstable in software development or design, bugs can occur. In the financial field, the risks are higher, but challenges are also part of the mission.
“The easy thing to do is go sell marketing AI,” Lawrence joked. “The hard part is solving the things that really matter.”
