Garman: iOS 18 brings AI photo editing, Siri improvements, and revamped notifications

AI News

Apple's WWDC 24 is just around the corner, and Cupertino is widely expected to unveil the AI-powered iOS 18, touted as “one of the biggest overhauls in iOS history.”

A new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman provides further details on the new AI features set to be released in iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15. These include AI-powered Safari, Photos, Notes, and enhanced Siri and notifications with smart summaries. Apple is said to bring AI-powered photo retouching, a revamped Safari web search, and improvements to Spotlight search for faster and more reliable results.

Siri will be significantly improved for more natural voice interactions based on Apple's in-house LLM. Messages and Mail will have automatic replies generated based on your conversation. Smart Summary will show you summaries of missed notifications and messages, as well as web pages, notes and documents.

Users will also have the option to transcribe voice recordings directly. Apart from the existing emoji set, Apple is also working on auto-generated custom emojis that will appear as suggestions as you type.

Apple's new set of AI features is being dubbed “Project Greymatter” internally, and Gurman clarified that less demanding AI tasks will run on-device while more resource-intensive tasks will be sent to the cloud. He also stated that iPhone, iPad and Mac chips released last year will be able to run the new AI features.

There's also more evidence of a redesigned home screen, which will now allow users to position app icons anywhere on the screen and change the background color.
