PUTRAJAYA, July 15 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the public is urged to be wary of scams involving the distribution of fake videos and images, or deepfakes, created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Speaking at the Ministry of Communications' monthly meeting today, he said the use of AI can indeed help the country's development, but some actors are misusing the technology.

“Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza in an Instagram post a few days ago showed off a WhatsApp video call which appeared to be her speaking, but it was a live deepfake.

“AI can be used for good or for bad. We need to be careful about the information we receive and check whether the videos we receive are real or have been created by AI applications,” he said.

Fahmi therefore called on the Malaysian News Agency (Bernama) and Radio and Television Malaysia (RTM) to inform and educate the public about the dangers of fraud using AI deepfakes.

Yesterday, the country's number one singer was reported to have revealed the latest scheme by scammers who are believed to be using AI technology to impersonate her voice and face to make money.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said he plans to meet with representatives from all social media platforms in Singapore later this month to discuss several issues, including the dangers of AI on their platforms.

“WhatsApp is under Meta's responsibility, so hopefully the problem of AI-generated deepfakes will be solved by Meta,” he said.

At the same time, he suggested that all ministries and agencies use AI in their operations and asked the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR) to coordinate a course on the technology.

“AI can help not just in content creation but also in various other aspects such as tasks like coding, programming, data analysis and other areas where AI can be useful,” he said.

Also attending the rally were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohammad Fauzi Mohamed Isa, Bernama chief executive officer Noor-ul-Afidah Kamaruddin and editor-in-chief Arul Raju Dulal Raj. —Bernama
