Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence
AMA House of Delegates uses the term Augmented Intelligence (AI) as a conceptualization of artificial intelligence focusing on the supporting role of AI, emphasizing that its design enhances human intelligence rather than replacing it.
AMA policy for AI development, deployment and use
AMA policy for AI development, deployment and use
AMA is committed to ensuring that AI can advance clinical care and maximize its potential to improve clinician well-being. With the number of AI-enabled healthcare tools continuing to grow, design, development and deployment in an ethical, fair and responsible way is critical. The use of AI in healthcare must be transparent to both physicians and patients.
In addition to medical devices, AI is increasingly being used to reduce the burden on healthcare management or physicians, requiring policies and guidance for both device and non-device healthcare AI. Recognise this and AMA A new policy has been developed (PDF) Addressing the development, deployment and use of healthcare AI with a special emphasis:
- Healthcare AI Monitoring
- When will we disclose to improve AI transparency?
- Generated AI Policy and Governance
- Physician's responsibility for the use of AI-enabled technologies
- AI Data Privacy and Cyber Security
- Using AI and automated decision-making systems payers
AI doctor's emotions
AI doctor's emotions
In 2023, the AMA conducted a comprehensive study of the sentiment of over 1,000 physicians towards the use of AI in healthcare, including current use, key concerns, maximum opportunities for adoption and future motivations. (PDF). The objectives of this study are as follows:
- Capturing emotions among practitioners regarding the increased use of AI in healthcare
- Evaluate AI use cases based on familiarity, relevance, and usefulness
- Identify key resources and areas of need for physicians to consider implementing AI tools for practice
Doctors are primarily keen on the potential of AI in healthcare, with 68% seeing at least some advantages in AI use from 65% in 2023. It also increased from 38% in 2023 to 66% of doctors reporting using a certain type of AI tool in 2024.
However, there are still important concerns as doctors continue to explore how these tools influence their practices. Implementation guidance and research, including clinical evidence, remains important to help physicians adopt AI tools.
AI in medical education
AI in medical education
AI plays an increasingly important role at all stages of the medical education continuum, both as a tool for educators and learners and as a research subject. AI could transform educational experiences as part of precision education and patient care as part of precision health. Learn more about how AI can affect medical education.
