DoorDash delivery app launches with ChatGPT for grocery shopping

AI For Business

DoorDash, Inc. announced Wednesday that it is launching a new grocery shopping app within OpenAI's ChatGPT platform, just one week after rival Instacart announced a similar feature.

The food delivery company said the integration will connect ChatGPT's offering with DoorDash's national grocery network, allowing customers to translate recipes and meal ideas “directly into grocery orders delivered in as little as an hour.”

“This partnership is a big step in meeting customers looking for inspiration and delivering the DoorDash experience they already know and love,” the company said in a statement.

Andy Fang, co-founder of DoorDash, said the partnership will help streamline the meal planning and shopping process, adding, “AI will unlock an entirely new search and discovery experience for consumers that is dynamic and personalized.”

“We're excited to partner with OpenAI to build a seamless experience that allows users to quickly order ingredients for any recipe and checkout directly in DoorDash.”

Fang added that the move is part of a broader push to expand the use of AI, saying, “As we expand this experience to more shopping categories, we are focused on building AI tools that give people back their time and make local shopping easier.”

DoorDash said the partnership will make grocery shopping “easier, faster and more convenient,” explaining that ChatGPT will be able to adjust recipes and turn ingredients into grocery lists based on users' preferences. Once the list is complete, users can open their cart in the DoorDash app and have their order delivered from a local store.

DoorDash said the partnership includes Kroger, Safeway, ByRite, Schnucks, Fairway Market and Wegmans.

“ChatGPT's DoorDash app is another step in realizing our vision of AI connecting directly to real-world services, saving people time and effort in their daily lives,” Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, said in a statement.

DoorDash's announcement comes a week after Instacart introduced an app on ChatGPT that allows customers to create online grocery carts for quick payments and deliveries.

“Instacart and ChatGPT are redefining what is possible with AI-powered shopping,” said Anirban Kundu, Chief Technology Officer, Instacart. “This experience, built on agent commerce protocols, brings intelligent, real-time support to one of the most important parts of daily life: getting the groceries to feed your family.”
