Did code red work?
OpenAI is dominating business users and has a significant lead over rivals like Anthropic and Google in the enterprise AI market, according to new data this week.
This is in contrast to some of the hand-wringing that has been going on since Google’s Gemini chatbot started using ChatGPT a few months ago.
The new data comes from Ramp, a startup that helps businesses pay their bills. Ramp analyzes corporate card and bill payment activity on its platform from more than 50,000 U.S. businesses, tracking billions of dollars spent on AI services each month.
Latest figures cover December 2025. The report shows that OpenAI has regained momentum among U.S. companies, posting its strongest growth in recent months as AI adoption continues to accelerate across the enterprise.
The share of U.S. companies paying for AI products and services rose to 46.6% in December, an increase of 1.6 percentage points from November. This was the largest month-over-month increase since mid-2025, according to RAMP data.
Much of that growth was driven by OpenAI. Enterprise adoption of OpenAI products rose 2 percentage points to 36.8%, reversing a brief fall slump and hitting an all-time high. Ramp itemized data shows increases in both enterprise chat subscriptions and API spending, suggesting widespread use of OpenAI across office workers and technical teams.
It’s unclear how many paying users OpenAI currently has, but the company announced it had 1 million enterprise customers as of November 2025.

This recovery highlights OpenAI’s continued dominance in the enterprise AI market as companies move beyond experimentation. December’s growth reflects recurring spending related to day-to-day business functions such as software development, research, finance, sales, and customer support, rather than trials.
Competitors continued to improve their positions, albeit at a slower pace. Anthropic’s adoption rate rose to 16.7%, with growth concentrated among API-heavy technology companies.
Google’s AI adoption rate increased to 4.3%, but Lampe notes that this number may underestimate usage, as many companies access Gemini for free through Google Workspace plans.
These ramp numbers also do not include business uses of free AI tools that do not result in paid transactions, or when employees use personal accounts with AI companies to complete work tasks. This means that this data may underestimate the actual rate of AI adoption.
