Social media platform

Social media platform X has imposed strict rules on creator revenue as the West Asia crisis intensifies. The platform announced on Tuesday that it would stop distributing revenue to creators. The program imposes a 90-day deadline for posting AI-generated videos of armed conflict without disclosing that they were artificially created.

The announcement came amid the recent ongoing West Asia crisis following the US and Israeli attack on Iran. Social media is flooded with fake and misleading AI-generated war videos.

Threats to information reliability

The company made the decision to target what it described as a threat to the credibility of the information.

“During wartime, it’s important that people have access to authentic information on the ground,” said Nikita Beer, head of product at Company X.

“During wartime, it’s important that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technology, it’s easy to create content that misleads people,” he said.

Under this policy, users who post AI-generated videos depicting armed conflict without clearly disclosing that the content was created using AI will be suspended from the Creator Revenue Share Program for 90 days. Repeated violations will result in permanent suspension from the revenue sharing program.

“Made with AI label”

According to X’s head of product, enforcement will rely on community notes attached to posts, as well as metadata and other indicators that indicate the content was created using generative AI tools.

He added that the company will continue to improve its policies to remain a trusted source of information.

On X, one user asked what would happen if someone unknowingly shared an AI-generated video, saying that some clips are so realistic that they are difficult to identify. In response, Nikita Beer said users should add the “Made with AI” label by selecting “Add Content Disclosure” from the post menu.

Crackdown on AI-generated images

The move marks a major crackdown program on the production of AI-generated images as the platform grapples with a surge in AI-generated misinformation. Lately, social media has been flooded with deepfake content, where real images are generated using advanced AI tools.

Independent fact-checkers have debunked multiple posts claiming to depict current conflict scenes that have actually been altered or fabricated.
