The UK National Commission on the Regulation of AI in Healthcare is tasked with advising the MHRA on how to rewrite the AI Regulation Rules Book of Healthcare, which will be released next year.
The committee invites experts from leading tech companies such as Google and Microsoft, as well as key clinicians, researchers and patient advocates to advise regulators on how to speed up access to the latest technology in a secure way.
“AI has the incredible potential to help doctors find and treat illnesses previously, but we need experts to come together so patients can benefit quickly and safely from these opportunities,” said Liz Kendall, Science and Technology Secretary.

The committee is head of the UK Centre for Excellence in the UK, chaired by Professor Henrietta Hughes, Clinician and Patient Safety Committee of the UK Centre for Excellence in Regulatory Science at AI & Digital Health (CERSIAI), and chaired by Professor Alastair Denniston.
Professor Alastair Denniston, chairman of the committee, added: “The safe and effective use of AI in healthcare is one of the critical challenges and opportunities in our time.
'This committee marks key steps to help the UK lead the way in responsible innovation and promote the availability of AI technology that can support better health for everyone. By bringing together diverse expertise, we can build a regulatory framework for AI that is trusted by public and healthcare professionals and that will truly benefit patients.
“Healthcare AI can have a significant benefit to patients, but it needs to be regulated carefully,” said Professor Henrietta Hughes, Patient Safety Committee and Vice Chairperson of the Committee. When developing AI use in healthcare, you need to listen to the patient's views and make sure its use is safe and fair.
Representatives, including other regulatory bodies, will be voiced by the National Committee of AI, across the UK's healthcare ecosystem and internationally, to ensure advice that balances patient safety and innovation.
A formal call of evidence is launched to ensure that the committee's work reflects the full perspective. This will help us contribute to the UK and internationally, shape the committee's recommendations and address the most pressing challenges in AI regulation.
