CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif's viral video supporting Rajab Butt was generated by AI

Following the physical assault of YouTuber Rajab Butt in a Karachi court on December 29, a video began circulating online in which Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif allegedly expressed support for Butt and promised action against the lawyers involved in the attack.

The video is not real. It was created using publicly available artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

Claim

On December 30, an Instagram user posted a short video clip with a caption in Urdu that read, “Justice for Rajab Bhatt.”

In the video, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is purportedly heard saying, “Today, when some dastardly lawyers attacked Rajab Butt outside the courtroom, they caused him serious harm and he was injured.”

And she says she will have to take responsibility for the injustices committed against Rajab Butt outside a Karachi court.

As of this writing, the post has been viewed more than 3 million times, viewed more than 581,000 times, and liked more than 68,000 times.

Multiple AI detection tools and the Punjab Information Minister have confirmed that the video in circulation was generated using AI and was not recorded by the Punjab Chief Minister after the attack on the YouTuber.

Checking geographical facts When the clip was analyzed using the University at Buffalo's DeepFake-o-Meter, it was determined that the video was likely generated by AI, returning a false probability score of 84.44%.

Additionally, the deepfake audio detection tool Hiya gave the audio a low reliability score of 24 out of 100, indicating that it was likely synthetic.

Further analysis using Google's SynthID, a detection tool developed by Google DeepMind to identify AI-generated content, also showed that the video was created using a generative AI model.

Additionally, a comparison with Maryam Nawaz Sharif's verified public speech reveals notable discrepancies in the viral clip's voice modulation, tone, and accent.
