Participants leveraged Cloudera and AMD hardware to create innovative machine learning solutions to combat environmental issues.
Cloudera, the trusted enterprise AI data company, today announced the winners of its inaugural climate and sustainability hackathon. The competition, held in partnership with AMD, a high-performance adaptive computing company, invites data scientists from around the world to develop end-to-end solutions focused on solving the many environmental challenges facing the world today. Developed the Accelerated Machine Learning Project (AMP). .
AMP is a fully built end-to-end data science solution that can be deployed with one click directly from Cloudera or accessed and built via a public GitHub repository. A unique open source community provides a comprehensive framework to instantly build, deploy, and monitor business-ready machine learning applications.
To foster fast, powerful computation and breakthrough innovation, hackathon participants were given access to Cloudera Machine Learning, powered by AMD hardware, to develop their own AMP. Cloudera provided guidance on the types of climate challenges participants are welcome to tackle, including improving carbon stock calculations, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and addressing the global water crisis.
Over two phases from October 2023 to March 2024, more than 2,300 data scientists participated in the climate and sustainability hackathon and submitted nearly 200 innovative AMPs. The top three winners were selected by nine judges based on a defined set of criteria related to solution uniqueness, code quality, web application quality, and potential environmental impact. I did. Cloudera is making the entire code of the winning projects publicly available to ensure the event contributes to the collective effort to address the climate crisis.
The winning projects are:
· 1st place: AviWind Guardian. As communities grapple with the climate crisis, transitioning to renewable energy such as wind is essential, but it also poses ecological risks. The growth of wind farms increases risks to migratory birds through turbine collisions and habitat destruction, threatening species and ecological balance. Ohio State's Tim Trueblood helps wind energy developers and conservationists make informed decisions and explores renewable energy advances and bird species important to maintaining ecological balance. We have developed tools to achieve a balance between protecting life and protecting life.
· 2nd place: Weather Technology Center: With weather-related events on the rise around the world, Mexico-based Code of Duty has built an easy-to-use application to improve the reliability of wind speed predictions. The application considers various factors such as maximum wind speed, latitude, longitude, barometric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind direction, average wind, and rate of change in wind speed for proactive decision making and timely escalation. This enables us to respond in a timely manner. Hurricane category.
· 3rd place: Impact of climate change on Himalayan forest areas: Himalayan forest areas are under threat from climate change as rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events upset the delicate balance of this fragile ecosystem. Exposed. In response, a team of India-based data scientists Lokesh Sharma, Avantika Ratwal, and Dr. Rehana Shaikh developed a new tool to analyze the correlation between regional temperature and precipitation. We've enabled our community to better anticipate and adapt to these changes. .
“By providing seamless integration, scalability, and flexibility, Cloudera enables users to quickly prototype, test, and deploy cutting-edge AI solutions that can address some of the most pressing sustainability issues. ” Charles Sansbury, Cloudera CEO. “The amazing results of our climate and sustainability hackathon further demonstrate what data scientists can accomplish by leveraging Cloudera. I was truly impressed by the immense creativity and quality of the entries. We are inspired by the potential the entire Cloudera community can create to improve sustainability efforts around the world.”
Cloudera plans to host additional hackathons aimed at creating innovative machine learning solutions for the greater good. To learn more about or test Cloudera's machine learning capabilities, visit www.cloudera.com/.
