OpenAI has outlined an ambitious roadmap for ChatGPT in 2026. The aim is to turn AI chatbots into “personal super-assistants” and refine their tone, while also addressing the functionality overhang of AI products and unlocking broader economic value.
“In 2026, ChatGPT will be more than a chatbot you can talk to and get advice and answers. It will evolve into a true personal super-assistant that helps you get things done. It understands your goals, remembers your context over time, and proactively helps you make progress across the things that matter most,” Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, said in a Substack post on Monday, January 5th.
Hinting that OpenAI will roll out more GPT-powered products this year, Simo said the team also needs to double down on the startup's 2025 launches, including ChatGPT Pulse and ChatGPT App Store.
“Invest in collaboration features like group messaging to unlock multiplayer workflows and empower users to plan and create together,” she added. The former Instacart CEO and head of the Facebook app said OpenAI will continue to improve ChatGPT's core use cases, including writing, learning, health, shopping, advice and personal finance.
Simo's roadmap to bridging the gap between AI capabilities and everyday use reinforces the narrative that ChatGPT is on its way to becoming the app for everyone. Simo has earned a reputation as a product visionary known for scaling consumer apps globally, and since joining OpenAI last year, he has been responsible for all ChatGPT-related features that could help generate revenue.
However, Simo faces difficult challenges, and many experts say a clear monetization path for AI remains elusive. Additionally, OpenAI is pumping more than $1 trillion into data centers and AI infrastructure, with the expectation of revenue from new shopping tools, consumer gadgets, online advertising, Sora sales, and government deals.
“Raw intelligence alone is not enough to make AI the greatest source of empowerment. We must turn that capability into something useful. If we do that, ChatGPT will become the place people come to every day to accomplish the most important parts of their lives and work,” Simo wrote in a blog post.

OpenAI corporate goals
In addition to creating value for consumers, Simo also emphasized the focus on meeting the demands of the most AI-driven companies. Claiming that GPT 5.2 is the best AI model for everyday professional work, OpenAI executives say: You'll get better at codingproduction of artifacts (i.e., documents, sheets, slides), organizational memory, and other tasks that companies value. ”
Amid the rise of AI agents, Simo emphasized the need to develop a shared foundation to deploy and manage these autonomous systems at scale. “We are well-positioned to be the foundational operating system for enterprise automation, and we are working to make it easy for businesses to connect to a thriving ecosystem of AI companies and services beyond themselves,” she said.
OpenAI also plans to improve ChatGPT for Work to better understand an organization's context (documents, systems, workflows). He also mentioned developers as central to ChatGPT's 2026 strategy. “Our goal is to give developers the platform they want to build with automated teammates they can trust,” said Simo.
