To understand the dynamics of the transformative capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on competition, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has invited proposals from government agencies and agencies to conduct a market study.

This study aims to explore both the pro-competitive potential and competitive concerns arising from the use of AI across various sectors.

Research objectives include a multifaceted investigation into AI and competition, with the aim of uncovering key aspects of this rapidly evolving landscape. The study analyzes key AI systems, stakeholders, market structure, and competitive parameters. Potential competition issues within the AI ​​market will come under scrutiny. The scope and nature of AI applications will be studied to assess the associated opportunities, risks, and competitive implications.

Existing and evolving regulatory frameworks governing AI systems and applications in the country and other key jurisdictions are explored. Additionally, we analyze AI trends and patterns to identify CCI enforcement and advocacy priorities.

This includes various aspects within the AI ​​ecosystem and the impact of AI applications on competition, efficiency, and innovation in user industries.

The main focus areas are:

• Analysis of leading AI systems based on machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.

• Study of market size, growth trends, and concentration within the AI ​​development ecosystem.

• Identification of entry barriers, revenue generation strategies, and competitive advantages in the AI ​​market.

• Evaluation of AI applications in user industries such as retail, e-commerce, logistics, and marketing.

• Research on the impact of AI on market structure, behavior, and performance, including the role of AI in shaping consumer behavior.

• Scrutiny of potential anti-competitive strategies facilitated by AI and the means to address them.

• An assessment of the regulatory framework governing AI and best practices for assessing the impact of AI on competition.

This research involved collating existing research with secondary data, identifying and building a stakeholder database, conducting surveys, interviews, intensive group discussions with key stakeholders, editing, analyzing, and triangulating. Use a combination of secondary and primary research. Gather qualitative and quantitative information and prepare interim and subsequent final reports.

It was also stated that both the CCI and the selected agencies would appoint a single point of contact (SPOC) for day-to-day coordination. CCI personnel will be part of the investigation team to ensure timely completion and quality assessment. Interested institutions or agencies are invited to submit proposals by June 3, following the guidelines set out in the Request for Proposal (RFP) document available on the CCI website.
