Kamba and OpenAI is running non-profit Hackathon in Australia. Help selected organizations explore ways to A.I. Support workflows, tool building, content creation, and team productivity.
The event will be held at Canva’s headquarters in Surry Hills, New South Wales on June 11th and applications close on May 29th. Participation is limited to 20 nonprofit organizations, with a maximum of four participants per organization.
The hackathon is designed for Australian not-for-profit teams working across sectors such as youth, local communities, disability, climate and environmental action, education, health, arts and culture. Applicants will be asked to describe the problem or idea they want to address, their technical skill level, their current use of AI and Canva, and any datasets, workflows, privacy, and compliance considerations associated with their project.
Hands-on support with OpenAI and Canva tools
The registration page says attendees will hear from experts on automation, AI-powered architecture, and productivity. Teams will also have hands-on access to OpenAI tools, including Codex, along with Canva’s latest AI products.
This event is centered around practical nonprofit use cases rather than general AI awareness. The application form asks if your organization would like support with strategy and ideation, workflow automation, custom GPT or agents, API and developer support, data analysis and modeling, staff training, Canva design automation, content workflows, and more.
This gives the event broader remit than a standard AI workshop. Nonprofits are being asked how they currently handle design and content creation for social media, fundraising campaigns, reports, presentations, internal communications, and more, and whether they want to automate those processes.
Will Snell, GTM APAC at OpenAI, shared the registration link on LinkedIn and wrote, “This is a non-profit hackathon with our good friends and partners at Canva. Please share and sign up.”
Focus on workflow, content, and nonprofit capabilities
The event is structured around helping nonprofit teams “build smarter, act faster, and scale their impact,” according to registration materials. Applicants will be asked if they already have access to AI tools, APIs, and developer resources such as ChatGPT, and if they currently use Canva.
The form also categorizes applicant teams by technical skill level, from non-technical staff focused on strategy and problem definition to teams comprised primarily of developers, data scientists, or engineers. This suggests that the event is structured for mixed cohorts, not just technical teams.
The selection process considers eligibility, suitability for the event, capacity, and cohort balance. Completing the form does not guarantee participation.
Applications close in May
Applications for the Canva and OpenAI nonprofit hackathon close on May 29th, ahead of the in-person event on June 11th. Catering will be provided and selected organizations can bring up to four staff members.
The application questions show where Canva and OpenAI expect to see demand from nonprofits, including workflow automation, AI assistants, data usage, content creation, and staff hiring. This event provides a small but visible test for the nonprofit and education sectors of how AI tools are being applied beyond commercial productivity use cases.
