A Canadian politician who claimed that a voicemail he allegedly left for a potential mayoral candidate last summer was generated by artificial intelligence has been arrested and charged with intimidation.
Ontario MP Corinna Traill was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of intimidation, according to Peterborough, Ont., police.
Former mayoral candidate Tom Dingwall wrote on his Facebook page in September that Trail left him a voicemail in August asking him not to run for mayor so his friend could run without charge.

“Mr. Trail made it very clear that if I didn't do that, he would come to my house, kill me, sexually assault my wife, and then sexually assault me again,” the lawsuit alleges.
He called for Trail to resign, adding, “Let me be clear: No elected official who is paid to represent us should ever use intimidation or intimidation to dissuade him from holding elected office or serving in public service, especially in the interests of his friends.”
Trail denied sending the voicemail in a statement she posted on Facebook in September.

“I want to be clear and clear: I did not create this message,” she wrote. “I have received information that artificial intelligence technology is involved. Part of the voicemail is my voice, but other parts are artificially generated.”
She wrote at the time that her team was trying to determine who created the message.
“For more than a decade, I have worked to represent the best interests of my community, advocate for residents, and ensure local decision-making reflects the values and priorities of the people I serve,” she added. “Despite these circumstances, that dedication remains unwavering.”

Trail was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court in January, the police department said.
