A Canadian man has been sent to prison for creating an artificial intelligence-generated child pornography video, reports Wednesday.
Stephen LaRouche, 61, has pleaded guilty to using “deepfake technology” to create at least seven videos. Deepfake technology uses algorithms to perform face-swapping, illusions, and making someone say or do something they didn’t say or do.
Larouche also admitted to having hundreds of thousands of computer files of child pornography and was sentenced to four and one years in prison, The Canadian Post reported.
District Court Judge Benoît Gagnon sentenced LaRouche to eight years in prison with credit for his time in prison.
Larouche’s attorneys argued for less time because no child was assaulted when he made the video. Gagnon disputed their allegations, saying that the children appearing in the video had their sexual integrity violated.
In a ruling issued earlier this month, a judge said LaRouche’s composite image made it more difficult for police to stop the spread of this terrifying material.
Gagnon believes this is the first case of child sexual exploitation deepfakes in Canada.
In recent years, rapid advances in artificial intelligence have raised the alarm that users can easily create porn deepfakes.
Earlier this month, California introduced a law criminalizing the use of artificial intelligence to create pornography and use the likeness of a person without their consent.
The law, proposed by Republican Rep. Tri Ta of Westminster, Calif., aims to impose up to $1,000 or a year in prison for distributing “deepfake” pornography depicting individuals without their consent. .
