A team of military veterans has developed a human-validated AI gun detection solution.
In an effort to improve school safety following a rise in mass shootings across the country, Kansas lawmakers are proposing using AI-enabled camera systems to detect firearms on campuses. The technology, developed by veteran-founded company Zero Eyes, would trigger an alert to require a former law enforcement or military personnel to check people's bodies before dispatching authorities.
The proposal comes in response to a sharp rise in school shootings, with 2021, 2022 and 2023 seeing the highest numbers since at least 2008, the department said. CNN. There were at least 82 incidents in 2023 alone, and 2022 was particularly deadly, killing 46 people.
According to one report, interesting engineering, Kansas could provide up to $5 million in grants to equip schools with these AI-powered cameras. However, approval from Gov. ZeroEyes' technology was inspired by the tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. The company is currently the only company to qualify for similar state firearms detection programs in Michigan and Utah in 2023, and Florida and Iowa also passed legislation earlier this year. Proposals are also underway in Colorado, Louisiana, and Wisconsin. Missouri became the latest state to approve such a measure last Friday, allocating $2.5 million in matching grants for schools to purchase ZeroEyes' AI system.

How does this technology work?
Detection: ZeroEyes uses existing security cameras to monitor live video feeds for signs of firearms.
Verification: When ZeroEyes detects a possible firearm, the image is immediately reviewed by technicians at the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC). Technicians only review images where a firearm may be present.
Response: When a technician identifies a firearm, ZeroEyes instantly alerts school administrators and law enforcement (usually within 3-5 seconds) and provides details about the number of suspected shooters and their location.
