A conglomerate of record labels, including labels such as Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music, proposed a new set of guidelines on Wednesday for how AI-generated music will be featured on the charts, requiring only songs that are “substantially created by humans” to be subject to the industry’s success criteria.
Other groups and labels joining the coalition include Believe, BMG, Concord, Dirty Hit, Glassnote Records, HYBE Corp., Mom+Pop Music, and Partisan Records. Suggested criteria for inclusion in the chart include whether the AI-generated truck used a “properly licensed and lawful” service. whether they are “substantially created by humans”; Whether any concerns arise as to whether the track has manipulated streams or charts. The track then reveals on the platform that it was created using generative AI.
“This framework will establish a clear line between human-driven creativity and works that are purely synthetic or generated by unauthorized AI models,” the organizations said in a press release. “It will also help ensure that tracks with fraudulently increased stream counts are not recognized and celebrated on the charts. These principles will ensure that official charts truly celebrate human artistry while supporting the appropriate use of AI in the creative process.”
The proposed guidelines come as a number of labels are suing generative music platforms like Suno and Udio over training models on their own tracks. Additionally, several AI-generated tracks and artists appeared on various Billboard charts, including the Hot Gospel Songs chart and the Hot R&B chart, but none made it into the Hot 100.
