Chinese technology company ByteDance has reportedly postponed the global launch of its new AI video model, SeaDance 2.0, following a copyright dispute with a major entertainment company. The decision came after several Hollywood studios and streaming platforms expressed concerns about the potential misuse of copyrighted content.

According to reports, the company originally planned to release the video generation model to overseas users in mid-March. However, those plans are currently on hold as the company considers legal concerns and works to improve safety measures within its system.

Seedance 2.0 was officially introduced in February and quickly gained attention in the technology industry. This model uses artificial intelligence to combine text, images, audio, and video inputs to generate video content. ByteDance touted the tool as a solution for film production, advertising and e-commerce professionals, saying it could help reduce the time and cost of creating high-quality visual content.

Despite their advanced capabilities, the AI model quickly became the subject of controversy. Several videos created using this technology have gone viral in China, showing scenes involving famous characters and celebrities. One widely shared clip reportedly features actors Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in a fictional fight scene generated by an AI tool.

Entertainment giant Disney is among the companies that have expressed concerns. The studio has reportedly sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter accusing the company of using Disney-owned characters to train its AI systems without proper permission. According to Disney, the model included access to a collection of copyrighted characters from popular series such as Star Wars and Marvel, represented as if they were freely available public domain images.

ByteDance has previously said it takes steps to prevent the unauthorized use of intellectual property within its AI tools. The company said it is working on measures to prevent users from creating content that may violate copyright laws.

Reported delays in the global launch of Seedance 2.0 reflect the growing legal and ethical challenges facing companies developing generative AI technologies. As AI systems become capable of producing realistic images, video, and audio, concerns about copyright protection and ownership of digital content are growing across the entertainment and technology industries.

The model also attracted attention when compared to other advanced AI systems developed in China. Some experts point out that Seadance 2.0 represents technological advances similar to those seen in other competitive AI models developed by Chinese companies. Its ability to create movie-style stories and scenes from a small number of prompts has impressed several technology leaders and researchers.

ByteDance’s legal and engineering teams are currently reviewing this technology and making adjustments to ensure it complies with intellectual property rules. Engineers are reportedly adding new safeguards to restrict the production of copyrighted material and prevent further disputes.

While the launch schedule remains uncertain, the situation highlights how rapidly the AI industry is evolving and how important it has become for companies to balance innovation with legal and ethical responsibilities.
