Does AI help workers to work less hours a week? Senator Bernie Sanders thinks so.

In an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience released Tuesday, the Vermont Senator said that if it was up to him, the productivity and efficiency gains brought about by artificial intelligence and automation will be used to give workers time.

“You're a worker, your productivity is increasing as we give you AI, right?” Sanders said. “Instead of abandoning you on the street, I'm going to cut your work week to 32 hours.”

“Let's use technology to benefit our workers,” he continued. “What this means is giving more time with your family, friends and education, whatever you want to do. You don't have to work 40 hours a week anymore.”

Last year, Sanders introduced the 32-hour working week method. The Act requires employers to provide over 32 hours of overtime. This is equivalent to 8 hours a day over four days. Changes will be incrementally incrementally over four years.

The idea for a 32-hour work week has gained momentum in recent years, with some companies sayingincluding those that use AI, I've already started trying it out.

Top CEOs also predict that AI will spur shorter workers.

Logan also pushed Sanders during the episode about whether virtually all jobs were automated and whether people could find purpose in a work-free life.

“Work has been so essential to human existence forever, right? And you're all suddenly taking it,” Sanders said. “What do people do? How do they relate to each other? What I say at this moment is that the answer isn't just about falling in love with your AI creature.”

“Who knows, but I think humans can replace their work with other emotionally satisfying things,” Sanders said. “I think we can do that.”
