Beasley finds enough uses for AI tools

Applications of AI

This is one of a series of articles on how wireless organizations deployed tools based on artificial intelligence.

Justin Chase is Chief Content Officer Beasley Media Group, have 55 radio stations in 10 markets It offers audio technology, podcasting, e-commerce and event features. It reaches approximately 20 million consumers every week.

Radio World: When ChatGpt came out, our industry saw that generative AI technology could dramatically change workflows. Did this happen?

Justin Chase: Over the past two and a half years, we have discovered a wide range of opportunities to integrate AI throughout our operations. From creating content to enhancing commercial production workflows, AI has proven valuable tools.

In parallel, we took advantage of the opportunity to unlock underutilized features and optimize existing legacy systems, such as Wideorbit and selector, to suit today's landscape.

RW: Your company is willing to dive into new technologies over time and explore them. How did you approach AI?

Tracking: Caroline Beasley and our executive leadership team are consistently moving forward when it comes to emerging technologies. AI is no exception. From the beginning, we formed a dedicated AI working group to explore potential use cases. Today, the efforts have expanded dramatically as AI discussions and experiments are integrated into leadership conversations across all departments.

RW: Potential applications look almost infinite. How does Beasley use AI-based tools?

Tracking: We initially focused on audio production and partnered with Benz Town and Specia to create commercial and spec spots. Since then, AI integration has expanded significantly.

Currently, they use AI to generate digitally written and video content, piloting Futuri's AI-powered DJs at non-peak times at several stations in Charlotte. Other markets are testing super hi-fi platforms for cloud-based programming.

Business-wise, finance teams are embracing new accounting platforms that leverage AI to automate and optimize workflows. Additionally, we provide leaders with access to internal ChatGPT tools that are part of their daily workflow.

RW: We mentioned radio spec spots.

Tracking: Yes, I have successfully implemented Specai to generate spec spots. This tool has achieved good results and has become a reliable part of the commercial production process.

RW: Beadley Super Hi-Fi platform has been deployed on Florida's 50 kW FM. What were the advantages?

Tracking: That's the right thing to do. We have been testing Super Hi-Fi at WPBB in Tampa and have since expanded to several additional stations to better understand adaptability in various formats.

A positive trial results have benefits such as automated cloud-based music log generation and reduced dependency on large physical studio spaces that increase operational flexibility.

RW: What does AI do with the station's workflow? And how do you characterize success?

Tracking: At this stage, AI is primarily used to increase efficiency and reduce repetitive or time-consuming tasks. Importantly, we see AI as a support tool rather than an alternative to human surveillance.

For example, AI may help create content such as articles on digital platforms, but everything is reviewed by one of the amazing staff to ensure quality, accuracy and brand adjustments.

I am extremely pleased with the results of many of the AI initiatives so far. They have provided tangible benefits and have created valuable learning experiences. Some are still in the experimental stage, but the overall direction is promised and we are still excited about what will happen next.

RW: Does Beasley use cloned or synthetic voices in the air?

Tracking: We sometimes use composite voices in certain situations, especially the voices provided by Specai and Futuri. These tools have proven to be useful in complementing traditional voice work in specific scenarios.
