To move on in the intensifying artificial intelligence race, China's Baidu announced on Wednesday its new AI-powered image-to-video generator called MuseSteamer, along with major upgrades to the core search engine. The move comes as part of the company's broader strategy to bolster its enterprise AI delivery and defend its position against domestic rival bicentenance, Tencent and Alibaba.

MuseSteamer: Baidu image-to-video generator for businesses

Headline product, MuseSteamer is designed to turn static images into short AI-generated videos up to 10 seconds long. Baidu has launched the model in three variations: Turbo, Pro and Light. Perhaps it's about balancing video quality, production speed and computational efficiency.

Unlike Openai's SORA, which is scheduled to be launched for general consumer use, MuseSteamer focuses strictly on business users. Baidu has yet to release versions for individual creators and the public. This business-only strategy places MuseSteamer as a tool for sectors such as digital marketing, gaming, e-commerce, and content production. This model is expected to help Chinese companies reduce production costs and improve content workflows by eliminating traditional bottlenecks in video generation. Baidu has yet to disclose details on pricing or cloud infrastructure, but the launch suggests an attempt to carve out a niche in China's growing AI services market, where demand for multimedia content creation tools is rapidly rising.

Improved search engine using multimodal AI

Alongside MuseSteamer, Baidu has redesigned its flagship search engine and integrated deeper AI capabilities. The upgraded version comes with a more intelligent search box that supports long queries, voice input and image-based search. This combines Baidu with global trends that accept inputs in a variety of formats as search engines become increasingly multimodal and to improve user experience and search accuracy.

The results displayed on the platform are more contextually targeted and utilize Baidu's proprietary AI model to better understand the user's intent. Overhauling is seen as a strategic response to changing behaviors of users who expect a more natural and personalized answer, similar to what conversational AI systems offer.

Increased pressure from domestic competitors

Baidu's latest launch will take place at a time when pressure from domestic competitors increases. Bytedance's Doubao, Tencent's Yuanbao, and Alibaba's Tongyi have violated everything from consumer chatbots to enterprise-level generation tools, to the AI ​​space in China. In particular, bytedance has invested heavily in expanding Davao's ecosystem and user base across China.

Baidu is an early invoker with Ernie's large language model and has been successful with AI Cloud Services, but the grip of the core search and chatbot market is currently being challenged. The launch of MuseSteamer and the new AI-enhanced search experience reflects Baidu's strategy of doubling enterprise-grade AI and differentiating it from its rivals focused on the consumer segment.

The road ahead

By targeting companies with MuseSteamer and enhancing search products with multimodal AI, Baidu aims to strengthen its position as China's AI infrastructure leader. However, the lack of consumer products in the Creative AI space could be a blind spot if competitors like Bytedance and Openai can control the segment.

For now, Baidu appears to be focusing on monetizing AI innovation through B2B solutions, particularly in areas such as media, education and digital commerce.
