Australian universities have welcomed the Albanon Government’s newly announced National AI Plan 2025, saying it is a smart and timely step towards building a safer, more productive and more competitive Australia.
The plan, announced today, sets out a national approach to the deployment, development and management of artificial intelligence, a technology that is already reshaping industry, research and everyday life.
Universities Australia CEO Luke Sheehy said the strategy provides much-needed direction on how Australia can responsibly leverage AI and unlock its huge economic and social potential.
“AI is already transforming work, research and everyday life. This plan will give Australia the framework we need to use AI responsibly and competitively,” Mr Sheehy said.
He stressed that the opportunity ahead of Australia was significant. AI-driven innovation, if supported with the right policy settings and investment, can improve productivity, foster new sectors, and create high-value jobs.
A key theme of this statement is the central role universities will play in Australia’s AI future. From world-leading research and commercialization to training the specialized talent needed to develop and manage AI systems, universities are at the heart of this country’s capabilities.
“This plan correctly recognizes that government, industry and universities need to work together to ensure Australia remains globally competitive and to ensure AI is used safely,” Mr Sheehy said.
With the right safeguards, funding and long-term planning, universities can help Australia become a world-leading developer of AI, rather than just a consumer of AI technology, driving innovation, economic strength and national prosperity.
Australian universities say they look forward to partnering with government, industry and the broader community to ensure AI is deployed in a way that benefits all Australians.
