Artificial intelligence can help support missions and research projects across agencies, analyze data to uncover trends and patterns, and develop systems that can autonomously support spacecraft and aircraft.

NASA researchers and engineers have been using artificial intelligence safely for decades, and are now leveraging emerging AI technologies to develop self-driving cars technology from sifting through satellite images and exploring planets outside the solar system using deep spatial elasticity to best serve our mission.

The agency also considers external partnerships between private sector AI leaders and the science, technology, engineering and mathematics communities to promote cutting-edge development of a growing space economy and commercial space.

Autonomous driving on Mars

NASA is exploring Mars as part of its continued efforts to send humans to explore the solar system further and further.

AI allows spacecraft to make autonomous decisions and continue to function even if they are not in contact with the Earth. 88% of the driving carried out by Perseverance Rover are autonomous. The rover captures images of the terrain with its camera, analyzes these images on an onboard computer to identify dangers, navigate these obstacles, and drives terrain that humans have never seen before.
