EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A Michigan State University forum provides students and business leaders with an in-depth look at how artificial intelligence is being used in manufacturing.
The Apple Manufacturing Academy Spring Forum, hosted with Apple Inc., focused on practical applications of AI across industries, including automotive production and supply chain management.
“We teach them smart manufacturing techniques,” said Priya Balasubramaniam, vice president of operations. She added that the company defines these systems as “connected, lean, agile, scalable and sustainable.”
Organizers say the training can be applied to a variety of careers beyond manufacturing. Sarah Gretter, director of the Apple Manufacturing Academy, says there are many “transferable skills and techniques” that can be taught in many jobs.
The forum also showcased how AI is being used in less-expected environments such as agriculture.
“You don’t think about it when you open a carton of milk in the morning, but there are a lot of systems behind it, and AI plays a huge role in ensuring that the actual process of getting the cow into the fridge is safe and provides the best possible customer experience,” Gretter said.
The second day of the forum, on May 1st, will give attendees the opportunity to step into sites that are already implementing AI in their daily work. These locations include MSU’s Rare Isotope Beam Facility and Dairy Cattle Education and Research Facility.
As Michigan’s AI data center proposals continue to fail, many participants came to learn more about the positive use of AI for their companies’ workforces.
“I certainly agree with some of the concerns, especially at the bulk scale,” said Jack Koslosky of Blue Lake Packaging. “But we feel there are some advantages to manufacturing.”
Michigan is home to the only in-person Apple Manufacturing Academy in the United States, with virtual class options available as well. More information about the academy and our partnership with Michigan State University can be found on our website.
