As Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshapes the economy and society across the Asia-Pacific region, APEC is stepping up its efforts to ensure this transformation is safe, inclusive and sustainable. Over 200 policymakers, engineers and standards experts were convened at Incheon for the APEC AI Standards Council to guide the convergence of AI governance and technical integrity across the region.
“AI presents both the great opportunities and complex challenges that a single economy can solve on its own,” said Dr. Jinseok Bae, director of the Korean Technical Standards Agency (KATS), which held the conference.
“AI is rapidly changing industry and everyday life, but without general standards it puts fragmentation and mistrust at risk,” added Dr. Bae. “This conference is an opportunity for the APEC economy to coordinate efforts, exchange knowledge and support international cooperation to shape safe, inclusive, future-looking AI governance.”
The two-day meeting provided hands-on training, shared best practices, brought perspectives from global standards bodies, and strengthened that international cooperation is the key to responsible AI development.
During the opening session of the conference, Silvio Dulinski, deputy executive director of the International Standards Organization (ISO), highlighted the role of international standards in building trust, equity and security in AI. He emphasized that standards provide scalable, consensus-driven tools to adjust regulations and ensure diversity and inclusion in AI governance.

Diab points to the importance of capacity building for domestic industries and regulators, highlighting that global AI standards are still evolving and that the economy currently actively involved will help shape the future.
Participants discussed sector-wide AI use cases, explored emerging frameworks to guide testing, suitability assessment and implementation, and examined real-world applications of AI standards in areas such as ethics, human interaction, risk management, and environmental impact.
“Standardization is not just a technical process, it is the foundation of sustainable innovation and comprehensive growth,” concluded Dr. Kang Byung-Goo, chair of the APEC Subcommittee on APEC Standards and Rate of Conformance (SCSC), which oversees the initiative.
“We hope that the workshop will provide opportunities for collaboration between the APEC economies with AI standards. By working together, the APEC economies can ensure that the AI system is not only effective, but also aligns with shared values.”
