As part of the Computex 2025 announcement, AMD took a peek at gamers at major updates from the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology company. A future article, called FSR Redstone, brings a number of new features that match rival Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS).
The latest iteration of technology, FSR 4 debuted a few months ago with the launch of the Radeon RX 9700 series, particularly the Radeon RX 9070 and the Radeon RX 9070 XT.
The first batch of supported titles was limited to around 30 games, but AMD expects to double that number by June 5th, collaborating with the launch of the Radeon RX 9060 XT. Nonetheless, AMD has already plotted earlier, preparing the FSR Redstone as the next substantial upgrade of the FSR.
Although AMD did not provide specific details, Chipmaker highlighted the three features included in FSR Redstone: neural radiance caching, machine learning ray regeneration and machine learning frame generation. Some of these features may sound familiar, as they are already part of the NVIDIA DLSS suite.
AMD says that a cache of neural radiance effectively learns how light reflects within a scene. The goal is to forecast and store indirect lighting assets in cache. This can then be used to generate other rays. Logically, this helps to accelerate the path tracing.
Ray reconstruction is equivalent to Nvidia's ray reconstruction. This feature leverages a trained neural network to play back pixels that could not be traced correctly. Machine learning allows you to predict and filter particle-rich noise in real time.
With FSR Redstone, AMD enhances its super-resolution capabilities through the use of improved machine learning models designed to predict and reconstruct low-resolution frames for optimizing performance. Upscaling occurs in real time.
Like NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR also offers gamer frame generation. However, FSR has previously used an AI-free approach. Next-generation FSR Redstone should tap machine learning for frame generation and improve performance and quality.
AMD has not committed to a specific date for FSR Redstone's prime debut, and only shows releases later this year. FSR Redstone is now available with native compatibility with RDNA 4 graphics cards. Sadly, AMD did not specify whether it was backwards compatible with previous generations of RDNA graphics cards. FSR 4 is limited to RDNA 4, so FSR Redstone support for older generation AMD Radeon graphics cards looks even darker.
