Amazon has decided to allow Alexa+ to break out of its cage. The artificial intelligence-powered assistant will no longer be limited to Amazon devices, but will gradually roll out to the web and eventually be available to everyone.
For now, Alexa+ is only available on the web to early access users, but it still signals a significant change in Amazon's approach.
Amazon made the announcement on the first day of CES 2026, saying that the web version of Alexa+ will be accessible from Alexa.com as expected.
Alexa+, which works much like ChatGPT and others, isn't as specifically Amazon-focused as you might expect. You can use it to add ingredients needed for a recipe to your shopping cart, but it's also useful for tasks not related to shopping.
You can use the Assistant to manage your calendar, upload documents, and let Amazon use the data in those documents in any way you want. Of course, it can also be used to control devices you own within the Amazon ecosystem.
The fact that only a browser is required is a big draw, and Alexa+ usage is likely to skyrocket. Many people don't have access to the Assistant because they don't own any Amazon devices.
In announcing the rollout, Amazon said:
A new way to experience Alexa
You can now access Alexa+ from your browser. Dive deeper into topics and start conversations anytime, anywhere. Alexa maintains context across devices like Echo and Fire TV.
The company also lists some possible uses for Alexa+, including:
All-in-one planning
Alexa+ can provide inspiration for your next event or party, create checklists, help create invitations, and more. You can do all this from your browser.
resume where you left off
Start and continue a conversation from anywhere. Research topics on your computer, type or speak in the Alexa app, and choose conversations on your Echo, Fire TV, and other compatible devices.
discover and execute
Get answers on any topic, and put that knowledge into action with Alexa+, from scheduling and meal prep to reservations and more.
All part of Alexa+
The new Alexa isn't just accessible from anywhere. With natural conversation, you can tackle your daily tasks, plan ahead, and listen to personalized recordings using just your voice.
