CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu school education department plans to develop an artificial intelligence-based app to provide career guidance to school students studying in classes IX to XII. This app recommends courses based on students’ academic performance and interests.School Education Secretary B. Chandra Mohan said, “We will analyze students’ past performance and give them choices in courses and colleges. If students are interested in pursuing different courses, they will have more options in their field of interest.” This app integrates with Education Management Information System (EMIS).“It will help students make informed choices about higher education and different career paths,” he added. This app is scheduled to be introduced from next fiscal year (2026-27).The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has integrated career guidance into the school curriculum in 2022 to improve gross enrollment in higher education. Currently, government and aided schools guide students based on career guidance assessment tests conducted at high-tech institutes.Each school has trained teachers who provide career guidance to students. The government has also introduced a separate volume for career guidance. More than 100,000 students are enrolling at university this year as part of providing social exposure.Subject-specific textbooks for high school students include details about the top educational institutions for that particular stream.
