According to British researchers, a new generation of stethoscopes powered by artificial intelligence (AI) can change the way doctors detect life-threatening heart conditions.
In what experts call a potential “game changer,” a study led by Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust found that AI-enabled devices can identify heart failure, heart valve disease and abnormal heart rhythms within seconds.
Unlike the traditional stethoscope invented in 1816, the updated model replaces the chest with a playing card-sized sensor. Using a microphone records subtle differences in heartbeat and blood flow that humans cannot notice. The device simultaneously performs electrocardiograms (ECGs), sends data to the cloud, and is analyzed by AI trained on tens of thousands of patient cases.

According to BBC News, the study, which involves more than 12,000 patients over 96 GP surgeries in West and Northwest London, compared results and 109 practices without technology used. Results showed that heart failure patients were 2.3 times more likely to receive a diagnosis within one year when tested using an AI stethoscope. Additionally, abnormal cardiac rhythms (3.5 times higher) and valve disease (1.9 times higher) significantly improved detection rates.
Dr. Sonya Babu Narayan, clinical director and consultant cardiologist at the British Heart Foundation, described the innovation as “an elegant example of the humble stethoscope invented over 200 years ago, and can be upgraded over the 21st century.” She emphasized that early detection is important. “Frequently, these conditions are identified only at advanced stages when patients are present in emergencies. Early diagnosis allows people to access treatment faster and live longer.”
The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology in Madrid, the world's largest collection of heart diseases. Following the successful trial, plans are underway to introduce AI stethoscopes to GP practices in South London, Sussex and Wales.
