Dhaka, December 12, 2025 (BSS) – Education Advisor Dr CR Abrar said proficiency in artificial intelligence (AI) is now essential for library professionals.

“AI will not replace librarians. Rather, librarians will be replaced by people who cannot use AI. Learning AI is now mandatory for librarians,” he said.

He was speaking as the guest of honor at an international conference titled 'Rethinking Libraries: Building the Future with AI Technologies' held at the Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of Dhaka University today.

Conference discussions focused on four key themes: the role of AI in modern library and information services, emerging opportunities, challenges, and future readiness.

The Education Advisor said that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the modern education and information services sector and it is vital that librarians are at the forefront of this transformation.

“Artificial intelligence is not just a technological development, it is the next chapter in the evolution of human knowledge. If librarians do not become partners in this transformation, they risk losing their role as gatekeepers of knowledge,” he added.

The event was attended by researchers from around the world, including the past president of the American Library Association (ALA).
