Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services exporter, has been working on artificial intelligence (AI) since 1990, the company’s chief operating officer, N. Ganapathy Subramaniam, told Business Today. .
Subramaniam said, “Artificial intelligence is not new. uses it, I use it, my children use it.”
The COO also explained that AI has now reached a stage where it exceeds the capabilities of IT workers.
“The way I see it, the innovation around it, I think, is outstripping the productivity you can usually get from your employees because of the learning curve and all the other aspects,” Subramaniam said.
He further said that IT majors are applying AI to their products as well. He added that 95% of his code for TCS BaNCS is generated by prompts.
“For example, in our own product, TCS BaNCS, 95% of the code in TCS BaNCS is completely generated based on very high-level prompts we make about the higher-level specifications we create. So it’s nothing new in terms of generative power there,” he said.
But does this mean that engineering jobs are at risk? Subramaniam thinks it’s safe, at least for the time being. He explained that in the near future, productivity across the sector will skyrocket with the integration of AI in the workplace.
“For now, yeah, I think jobs will get safer. And I think the demand for such technology will only increase, so I would encourage everyone out there to learn and be prepared for this technology,” said COO. said.
During the company’s fourth quarter 2022-2023 earnings call on Wednesday, Subramaniam also noted how TCS clients are enthusiastic about AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
