We know that AI image and video generators have come a long way since the days of nightmarish videos of Will Smith eating spaghetti, but there's still a long way to go, as one challenge for the technology shows: gymnasts.
The video below is a compilation of AI-generated gymnastics footage using Luma. The transitions from one human form to another are terrifying, yet strangely fascinating as the four-legged athletes blend into themselves and their surroundings. It's a bit like looking through a haunted house mirror while on hallucinogens, and there are some glitchy digital artifacts mixed in.
The video was shared on X by tech twitter user @deedydas, who was amused that Google's Gemini found the video sexually explicit. While some have suggested that Luma has created a biblical version of gymnastics, the video is a reminder that AI can only generate a series of images based on available training data, and does not understand how the human body looks or moves. Or perhaps Luma's models are confused by the gymnasts' incredible physical abilities and mistake them for witches. In the past, people were hanged for lesser crimes.
