The Agartala city police took into custody a youth from Nandan Nagar and a youth from Sabroom’s Kalachera area late on Friday night, based on an FIR filed by a group of MDCs led by BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma, following the controversial distorted image of the Prime Minister allegedly created using artificial intelligence and spread on social media.
However, on Saturday afternoon, officers from West Agartala police station released one of the two detained youths, a young man named Mangal Koroy.
Late on Friday night, a large team of police and other security personnel sealed off Mangal Koroi’s house in Nandan Nagar area and took him to the police station, police sources said.
After being interrogated by senior police officials for the past 12 hours, Mangal Koroi released him as they found no evidence related to the distorted image of the Chief Minister that was being spread on social media.
Meanwhile, another youth was also detained from Karachera area of Sabroom on the same charges of disseminating distorted images on social media.
Speaking to media persons, SP (West Tripura) Namit Pathak said that investigation into the incident is underway and two youths have been detained based on preliminary information. He added that police could not reveal details of the incident at the early stages of the investigation.
Meanwhile, till the last report, the youths detained in Sabroom are yet to be formally arrested and released by the police personnel of East Agartala Police Station.
It may be recalled that on the evening of March 15, taking the issue seriously, a group of MDCs led by Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary Bipin Debbarma lodged an FIR against a social media account named Kolan Triprasa for spreading a distorted image of the state’s chief minister Dr Manik Saha along with Tipla Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.
A complaint has been lodged over the distribution of a doctored image of the Prime Minister that was created using AI technology and widely shared online. The plaintiffs alleged that the images were intentionally altered to defame the prime minister and mislead the public.
BJP leader Bipin Debbarma strongly condemned such defamatory acts by the unscrupulous suspects and maintained that the Chief Minister does not belong to any political party or community and represents the entire state. “To defame his clean image, some sections are taking political advantage and they are now trying to create fake AI images to tarnish the clean image of the Prime Minister,” Debbarma said, demanding immediate action by the police to identify those responsible for such distorted images and their spread on social media.
