PJM Interconnect, the largest power grid operator in the United States, says power usage has been rising sharply this summer. In some regions, bills can increase by up to 20%. One of the main drivers behind this trend is increased power consumption from data centers that support AI systems such as ChatGPT and other generation tools.

Why the Power Grid is struggling to catch up
PJM supplies 67 million customers to 13 states: Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Columbia. Manage complex networks with vast power distributions. This summer, the grid has shown signs of strain.
Over the past year, data centers running AI have begun using far more power. These centers can consume up to 30 times more power than traditional data centers. Most of them are connected to the same grid that serves homes and businesses. That is, everyone shares the cost of that power growth.

AI and data centers are driving a surge in energy usage
AI took off in 2023 when tools like ChatGpt were widely adopted. Since then, businesses have been competing to build more infrastructure to catch up. PJM's territory currently has the largest number of data centers in the world.
Between 2024 and 2025, electricity demand from AI and data centers in the PJM region contributed to an increase in electricity costs by $9 billion. PJM expects peak use this summer to exceed 154,000 megawatts, potentially exceeding the record high during heat waves and emergencies.

Why is electricity prices rising across the US?
Demand is rising rapidly, but power sources are not keeping up to the pace. Many fossil fuel plants are closed due to state regulations, aging infrastructure, or market conditions. In 2025 alone, more than 9,000 megawatts of coal capacity will be converted to retirement or gas.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Clean energy options such as wind and solar are often the cheapest ways to add new electricity, but developers struggle to allow delays, increased costs and loss of federal incentives. For example, the 30% federal solar tax credit for homeowners will end after 2025. The change has already delayed new installations.

How AI is increasing your electricity bill
Even if you've never used your own AI tools, you may still be paying for their growth. The cost of expanding data center power supplies is widening to all grid users, including regular households.
PJM customers have been warned to expect their electricity bills to increase by more than $25 a month. Commercial users can increase prices by almost 30%.
To prevent rolling blackouts, PJM is implementing a demand response program that pays large companies to temporarily reduce their electricity usage during periods of extreme demand. Still, if electricity usage exceeds 166,000 megawatts, some regions may not have enough reserves to maintain reliability.
