AI could replace rote memorization in the classroom

AI Video & Visuals

are you a big person

00:02 brian

I’m an advocate of AI in the classroom, and I think you and I are probably close to the same age. I used to think about how I was learning. That means I learned a lot. I had a good memory.

00:13 brian

And I always like to learn things quickly. Ah, but by the same token, I quickly forgot many things. But I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t imagine it.

00:20 brian

For example, we’re in fifth grade now and we have all these new tools. We have phones, we have all the external stimuli, we have new AI in the classroom, and I’m using an iPad to study. It’s just, it’s a lot, Dave, it’s a lot.

00:30 dave

Okay, Brian, I’ll ask you. Have you ever had to take a test in a state capital in school?

00:36 brian

Yes, there are state limits. And at some point you could have rifled through every state.

00:41 dave

It’s the same thing.

00:45 dave

Now, what a waste that would be! Considering all the things we had to learn, the fact that they are still being taught in schools like this is ridiculous to me. Because the comparative advantage that I have as a person is no longer that I know all the capital, right? It’s not that I memorize it, I memorize it.

It’s about their synthesis and and and the process. That’s what I think is number one.

#2 on AI, the results

01:14 dave

The impact of AI on schools is one of the most interesting things I’ve seen in the past decade.

01:21 dave

The World Bank conducted a large-scale study of 100,000 children.

01:28 dave

They were all trying to learn English. Half of them were just in the classroom. The other half spends an hour and a half twice a week in a guided chat GPT.

01:42 dave

The second group used chat GPT in addition to classroom learning.

01:48 dave

What they discovered was that 18 hours of Chat GBT was equivalent to a year and a half in the classroom. 18 hours

02:00 dave

It’s been a year and a half, but the results haven’t changed.

02:04 dave

why is that?

02:05 dave

We’re talking about students. The question I was asked when I was learning input and interaction was whether I was a soccer fan, and it was about soccer. If you’re a music fan, it’s all about your favorite bands. So it became about you. So if you’re not using AI in your classroom, if your kids aren’t using AI, sadly, they’re going to be left behind.
