Things are getting worse for most students who use AI for college applications, and Prepor just launched a tool to fix it

Applications of AI

Miami, Florida–(Newsfile Corp. – June 17, 2026) – Prepory, the college admissions consulting firm that has mentored over 14,000 students in 80 countries since 2012, today launched Rory, an AI college admissions tool built entirely from within the admissions process.

This announcement comes at a time when the majority of students applying to universities are already using AI. Most people don’t realize that the tools they rely on can have negative effects on them. The students who are hit hardest are the students who are going through it alone, without a coach or consultant who actually knows how these decisions are made. A 2026 study by researchers at Cornell University and Carnegie Mellon University quantified what admissions experts were observing firsthand. An analysis of more than 81,000 applications found that low-income students were 28% more likely to rely heavily on AI, faced nearly twice as much admissions penalty as higher-income students, and had an 83% lower chance of admission, even after controlling for GPAs and test scores, compared to 62%.

Rory was built on the premise that AI in college admissions is only as good as the expertise behind it, and that expertise must come from the people who were on the other side of the decision-making. Rather than deriving answers from extensive internet data, Rory is trained on over a decade of real student profiles, real application results, and internal admissions expertise that has never existed on the public internet. This tool is powered by over 400 years of experience from Prepoly coaches who are former admissions officers, Ivy League alumni, and university officials.

Rory is designed to bring to the surface, rather than replace, a student’s personal voice. We ask incisive questions, identify specific elements of a student’s profile, and provide school-specific ratings based on patterns from over 14,000 real, expert-led students. Also includes guardrails. We don’t create content that could trigger AI detection, and we treat sensitive topics, including mental health, with appropriate caution. AI tools that aren’t properly tuned can be very damaging to your college application, and Rory was built with that risk in mind.

This level of care is only achieved by using real skin in-game. “Rory exists because of the work our coaches have done with real students over the past 10 years,” said Prepoly CEO Daniel Santos. “It can’t replace what they’re doing, and it never was intended to. What it can do is bring the same level of expert judgment to students who don’t have a coach to rely on, and give them an honest and concrete understanding of where they really stand.”

Rory is currently available at prepory.ai.
