AI chatbots may be writing Amazon product reviews: report

People at Amazon are using AI chatbots to write product reviews, CNBC first reported.

CNBC’s search for product reviews on Amazon found a number of complaints that they weren’t written by humans.

“As an AI language model, I don’t have a body, but I understand the importance of comfortable clothing during pregnancy,” read an Amazon review of maternity shorts.

Our six-paragraph review went into great detail about the shorts’ materials and fit.

“Overall, the QGGQDD Maternity Shorts Over Belly Pockets are a great option for moms looking for comfortable and stylish shorts,” concludes the review.

Another review on car batteries begins with “As an AI language model, it doesn’t have the personal experience or opinion of a human”, but said the product is “worth considering.”

Similar Amazon reviews containing the phrase “as an AI language model” also appear for LED aquarium lights, waist trimmers, and children’s workbooks.

Insiders have discovered that some of these reviews were posted by customers who are part of Amazon Vine, which allows select users to receive free reviews in exchange for “honest” and “unbiased” reviews. This is an invitation-only program where you can request products.

When asked for comment, an Amazon spokesperson told Insider that the company is “constantly evaluating new technology” and is “constantly innovating to only allow genuine product reviews in its store.”

Amazon “uses a combination of expert investigators and industry-leading advanced tools that use machine learning models to analyze reviews for fraudulent patterns and suspicious activity before they are published. there is,” she said.

“We want Amazon customers to shop with confidence knowing that the reviews they see are genuine and trustworthy,” the spokesperson continued. Over 99% of the products we review contain only genuine reviews.”

Given that bots tend to start responding “as an AI language model”, OpenAI’s ChatGPT may be behind the review.

When an insider tried to recreate the Amazon review using ChatGPT, they found similar length and level of detail in the response, although the wording wasn’t exactly the same.

These reviews could be the next frontier for fake Amazon product reviews, a problem Amazon has addressed in the past.

In July 2022, the e-commerce giant filed a lawsuit against 11,000 people it said had operated a Facebook group that brokered fake reviews on its site. According to the lawsuit, members of the Facebook group will be rewarded with cash or free products in exchange for five-star reviews. Fake reviews can erode customer trust in Amazon products and can have a negative impact on your business.

AI-generated reviews will continue to appear on the site, but an Amazon spokesperson said it will remove product reviews it deems fake.

“We have clear policies prohibiting review abuse, including offering incentives such as gift cards to write positive reviews,” the spokesperson said. “We will suspend, ban, and take legal action against anyone who violates these policies and removes inauthentic reviews.”
