Warren Buffett, the 92-year-old legendary investor and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, likened artificial intelligence (AI) to building an atomic bomb. At his company’s annual meeting, Buffett expressed concern about the rapid advancement of his AI technology and how it would change the world. He argued that “AI can change everything in the world, except the way humans think and act.”
Buffett acknowledged that AI has limitations, such as its inability to tell convincing jokes. But he also recognizes his ability to do all sorts of things, which worries him. He even claimed he had an opportunity.
The comparison to the atomic bomb is significant because Buffett has long been an opponent of nuclear weapons, stating that he would spend all his money reducing the chances of an attack if he knew how. He said the creation of the atomic bomb was of great importance during World War II, but its release unleashed enormous power upon the world, changing everything except the way people thought and acted, in the words of Albert Einstein. He emphasized that we need to think about the long-term impact of AI, not just the short-term benefits.
